Q. Is it possible to have HP cylinders, compressors and vacuum pumps in the same location? Or, do they require separate enclosures?
A. NFPA 99, 2012 edition makes it clear that cylinders shall not be stored in locations with motorized equipment. NFPA 99, 5.1.3.3.1.4 states "Any system listed under 5.1.3.3.1.3 shall not be located in the same room with any system listed under 5.1.3.3.1.1 or 5.1.3.3.1.2."
5.1.3.3.1.1 Any of the following systems shall be permitted to be located together in the same outdoor enclosure:
(1) Manifolds for gas cylinders without reserve supply
(2) Manifolds for gas cylinders with reserve supply
(3) Manifolds for cryogenic liquid containers
(4) Bulk cryogenic liquid systems
5.1.3.3.1.2 Any of the following systems shall be permitted to be located together in the same indoor enclosure:
(1) Manifolds for gas cylinders without reserve supply
(2) Manifolds for gas cylinders with reserve supply
(3) Manifolds for cryogenic liquid containers
(4) In-building emergency reserves
(5) Instrument air standby headers
5.1.3.3.1.3 Any of the following systems shall be permitted to be located together in the same room:
(1) Medical air compressor supply sources
(2) Medical–surgical vacuum sources
(3) Waste anesthetic gas disposal (WAGD) sources
(4) Instrument air compressor sources
(5) Any other compressor, vacuum pump, or electrically powered machinery
